Park Slope Food Coop
Park Slope
782 Union St.
between 6th/7th Aves.
P: 718.622.0560
Founded in 1973, this is Brooklyn's largest cooperative grocery store, which probably means it's also New York's largest as well. Its members sustain and shop from this full-service, top-quality grocery store in Park Slope. Famous for inspiring raves, rants and rages.
What's great:
They sell more than 15,000 different items, including superb quality (organic and conventional) produce, cheese, organic poultry, grass-fed meats, sustainably farmed fish, bulk grains and spices, fresh bakery goods, grocery items, household goods, and more. Members save 20 to 40% on prices in exchange for being a coop member and working several hours a month.
What to know:
Anyone can become a member (you don't even need to live in Park Slope), but you must be a member to shop at the coop. Being a member means you must work at the coop for 2 hours and 45 minutes every four weeks, plus you must pay a $25 joining fee and invest $100 into the cooperative.
