One of New York's best bakeries. Founded in 1916, Orwashers has long been a beloved fixture on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Finally on its 100th anniversary, they took the leap to open their second storefront on the Upper West Side. They are loved for their Jewish bread and rolls baked in brick hearth ovens, plus their amazing sourdough levains.
What's great:
Traditional Jewish breads that are increasingly hard to find, such as New York rye and black pumpernickel. Their wine breads include ones made from NY wines and craft beers. The classics include ciabatta, spelt, burger buns, and baguettes. Sweets include iconic NYC cookies like the black and whites and brownies.
What to know:
The East Side shop is located mid-block on a residential side street with what appears to be an original tile floor and white painted wood shelving. They sell kosher breadcrumbs. Their hours vary by location so check the Orwashers website, but both open early.
