Caputo's Fine Foods

A family-run Brooklyn Italian grocer known for their store-made products and a wide selection of Italian charcuterie and grocery items. Frank Caputo runs the store and his father still makes the fresh mozzarella. A Carroll Gardens treasure since 1973.
What's great:
The mozzarella is hand-made daily and comes both salted and not, in all sizes including small balls (sometimes called bocconcini), medium and up to very large balls. There is a wall of their own pasta, both dry and fresh which includes ravioli, tiny ravioletti and tortelloni with a large variety of fillings including classic ricotta or mushroom but also grilled vegetables, goat cheese, roasted pepper and mozzarella, artichoke and more. In the winter there are fresh soups and year-round the store sells its own variety of pasta sauces.
What to know:
They sell about 30 different kinds of olives, about 40 kinds of olive oils, and some hard-to-find ingredients like farro and le fregole. The deli section includes a variety of cold cuts and cured meats, imported cheeses, and fresh Italian breads.
